The wedding-guest dos and don'ts

A few gentle rules make the difference between a good guest look and a great one.

Do:

• Read the invite. If there's a dress code or a colour theme, honour it — it's the couple's day, and coordinating is a kindness, not a constraint.
• Match the light. Day functions (mehendi, haldi, a morning wedding) love lighter fabrics and fresher colours; evening functions (sangeet, reception) welcome richer tones, deeper jewel shades and a little shimmer.
• Dress for the function, not just the photos. You'll be sitting, dancing, hugging and eating. Choose something you can genuinely enjoy the night in.

Don't:

• Don't upstage the bride. Steer clear of full bridal red-and-gold lehengas and heavy bridal whites unless the couple has asked for them. Look wonderful, but let her be the moment.

• Don't over-repeat across functions. With three or four events, plan distinct looks — a lighter piece for the day functions, a statement one for the reception.
